Server Requirements

DCForum has successfully served tens of thousands of clients whose platforms include UNIX, Linux, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. Following are the basic requirements:

Basic Requirements

  • Perl - Perl 5.005 or later is required to run DCForum on your server. To find out what version your server supports, please contact your hosting company.
  • CGI Access - Your web account must allow Perl/CGI execution at your Web site. Typically, cgi scripts are stored and executed in a directory called cgi-bin. r/w/e/d permission for the browser is required for 2 subfolders in the cgi-bin directory and at least one subfolder under your root directory. Again, please ask your hosting company if your web account has CGI access.
  • FTP - You will need FTP access to upload DCForum software files onto your web server.
  • Unzip utility - DCForum program is distributed in a ZIP file format. You will need a utility to unzip the file. If you do not own one, please check out WinZip.

Additional Requirements For UNIX/Linux Servers

  • Ability to change directory/file permissions. Normally, a function called "chmod" is used to perform this task.
  • Sendmail - To utilize DCForum's email features, sendmail must be enabled on your server. In most cases, sendmail is available.

Additional Requirements For NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Servers

  • SMTP email server
  • Ability to change folder permission to FULL CONTROL for EVERYONE - You will need to ask your hosting company to set folder permissions unless a browser-based admin menu is available with your account.
