Basic requirements
In order to install and use our products your server must meet all of the following basic system requirements:
- Unix or Windows WWW server system
- Ability to upload and set permissions on your own CGI scripts
- 2.0 MB free disk space for base program (more for messages)
- FTP or telnet/SSH/console access to server to install software
- Perl 5.005 or higher (on Windows, ActiveState 5.6+)
- Sufficient CPU and memory resources for script processing
- Ability to change permissions on files and directories
- Required: These modules and their prerequisites: strict, File::Basename, File::Copy, Digest::MD5, IO::Socket, Time::Local
Requirements for optional features
In addition to the basic discussion board system, DiscusWare products can be configured to work with an e-mail system or database to provide additional functionality. If you wish to use these optional features your server will need:

E-mail Sending Requirements
Several features of DiscusWare products are enhanced through the ability to have your board send e-mail messages to its participants. If you want to use the e-mail notification functions of Discus, you must have at least one of the following:
- Command line mailer ('sendmail' or 'mail' program on unix)
- BLAT mailer AND Win32::Process perl module on Windows
- Net::SMTP perl module and SMTP server to relay your mail
- Socket perl module and SMTP server to relay your mail
Image Manipulation Requirements
Discus Professional has two main image manipulation features that are made available through the "GD" graphics library.
Requirements for CAPTCHA security images:
- GD module supporting GIF/JPEG/PNG and truetype fonts
- GD::SecurityImage module
Requirements for profile image thumbnailing:
- GD module supporting JPEG images

Post By E-mail Requirements
Posting messages to the board typically is accomplished through the web interface. If you want your readers to be able to post a message to the discussion board by replying by e-mail to a notification of a new post, your server must meet the following requirements:
- Ability to receive e-mail at your WWW server
- Ability to "intercept" e-mail to a certain address (e.g. procmail or alias)
OR
- POP3 mailbox used only to receive posts to the board
- Net::POP3 perl module
- Ability to set up a scheduled task (e.g. "cron job") to monitor this mailbox
Network Requirements
The "Collaborative Spam Signature System" (Discus Professional 4.1+)
and the Version Manager (Discus 4.0+) communicate with the DiscusWare server
on certain ports.

Database Requirements
Discus Professional offers optional interfaces to a MySQL back-end database.
To store data in a MySQL database with Discus Professional, you need:
- MySQL database (version 3.23 or higher)
- Perl DBI and DBD::mysql modules on your web server
- FileHandle module
Backup/Restore Requirements
The built-in backup and restore functions of Discus support the Unix "tar" format.
